The SFI Code System is a structured and widely recognized framework developed by the Ship Research Institute of Norway (Skipsteknisk Forskningsinstitutt, now MARINTEK). This system was designed specifically for use in the maritime industry to facilitate the identification and classification of technical equipment on vessels, down to the spare parts level.
At its core, the SFI Code System employs a four-digit numerical code, often referred to as a technical chart of accounts, to categorize ship components. This ensures consistency, precision, and ease of maintenance planning and execution.
The first group of digits, consisting of three numbers, defines the main structure of the code. Each digit in this group has a specific meaning:
- First digit – Defines the function (Main Group).
- Second digit – Specifies the system.
- Third digit – Details the sub-system.
Example of the First Digit in the SFI Code
The first digit in the code is used to identify the function or main group of the ship’s components:
First digit | Main group |
---|---|
0 | Unused |
1 | Ship general |
2 | Hull |
3 | Equipment for cargo |
4 | Ship equipment |
5 | Equipment for crew and passengers |
6 | Machinery main components |
7 | Systems for machinery main components |
8 | Ship systems |
